Question

The response of plants to gravity is known as geotropism. How are plant parts sensitive to gravity ? Describe with the help of a diagram.

Solution

You can perform the following experiment to study geotropism (positive and negative).
Take a potted plant and place it horizontally so that root and shoot are parallel to the ground. Now observe the position

of growing stem and roots after few days.
Result: Roots of the plant shows positive geotropism i.e. they bend downwards, towards the earth while shoots show negative geotropism i.e. they bend, upwards away from the earth and towards the sunlight.
Observation
You will observe that stem of the plant bends upwards, that is, away from the earth (negative geotropism) while roots of the plant bends downwards, that is, towards the earth (positive geotropism). Hence this experiment confirms that shoots show negative geotropism and roots show positive geotropism.
