There should be at least 5 points here.
  • Talk about the RTI and its benefits.
Solution:

The Right to Information Act, 2005:
  • RTI was implemented in 2005 primarily due to the efforts of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan of Rajasthan and several other organisations and activists.
  • This Act ensures that all citizens are provided with the necessary information requested.
  • It also aims to increase the transparency and accountability of the government.
Changes RTI made to India’s governance:
  • Decentralisation of Power: The RTI Act has helped in the democratisation of information and decentralisation of power. Common citizens have been given the power to seek information from government officers regarding various schemes and programs. Citizens have shown more interest in government affairs and have sought information on numerous issues.
  • Greater transparency and accountability: The RTI Act allows citizens to seek information from the government, which makes the government more open to public scrutiny. It also empowers common citizens to hold the public authorities accountable for their actions and decisions.
  • Check on Corruption: The RTI has proved to be an effective tool to check corruption in India. Many scams like fund diversion during the Commonwealth Games, the Adarsh Society Housing Scam and the 2G Scam have been exposed because of the RTI.
