The Godavari is the largest river system of peninsular India. It originates in the Trimbak plateau of North Sayahadri near Nasik in Maharashtra. From its source, it flows eastwards in a narrow rocky bed up to Nasik but the river valley opens out below this point. Below Rajahmundry, the river divided itself into two main steams and forms a large delta before it pours into the Bay of Bengal.
