The cochlea is divided into two chambers. The upper chamber is called the scala vestibuli and the lower chamber is called scala tympani. These chambers are filled with perilymph. These chambers communicate with each other through the canal or an opening at the apex of the cochlea which is called helicotrema. This is the region where the two chambers meet. It is the main part of the cochlear apex. There are presence of hair cells in this region which can help in detection of sounds of very low frequency.
