Solution

The study of weather is called meteorology, and a person who studies the weather is called a meteorologist.

Meteorology is a branch of the atmospheric sciences with a major focus on weather forecasting. It also includes atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric physics.

  • Aristotle is considered the founder of meteorology
  • The word meteorology is from the Ancient Greek words meteor and logia meaning ‘the study of things high in the air’.
  • Meteorology has applications in many diverse fields such as agriculture, transport, military, construction, and energy production.
  • The sub-disciplines of the atmospheric sciences are Meteorology, atmospheric physics, atmospheric chemistry, climatology.
  • Atmospheric conditions both at the Earth’s surface and above are measured from a variety of sources: satellites, ships, radar, aircraft, weather stations, ships, buoys, and weather balloons.
  • Description of what is now known as the hydrologic cycle, is the most impressive achievements of meteorology.
  • The four meteorological scales are: global scale, mesoscale, microscale, synoptic scale.

Weather Forecasting

  • Weather forecasting is the application of science and technology to predict the conditions of the atmosphere at a given time for a given location.
  • Weather forecasts are made by using meteorology to project how the atmosphere will change and collecting quantitative data about the current state of the atmosphere at a given place.
  • In 2009, approximately $5.1 billion was spent by the US on weather forecasting and the benefits reaped out of it by the US is estimated to be six times. Hence weather forecasting is a big part of the economy.
  • The different sectors which benefit from weather forecasting are Agriculture, Marine, Forestry, Air Traffic, Military, commercial companies, utility companies.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) – Meteorology, Weather Forecasting

  • The principal agency in India responsible for weather forecasting, seismology and meteorological observations is the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
  • India Meteorological Department (IMD) is also one of the six Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres of the World Meteorological Organisation.
  • India Meteorological Department (IMD) is headquartered in New Delhi.
  • India Meteorological Department (IMD) has regional offices in Mumbai, Nagpur, Guwahati, Chennai, Kolkata.
  • Hundreds of observation stations across India and Antarctica are operated by IMD.
  • India Meteorological Department (IMD) functions under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India.
  • IMD collaborates with other agencies such as the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, National Institute of Ocean Technology, and Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology.

Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM)

  • The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) was founded as the Institute of Tropical Meteorology.
  • It was founded in Pune on 17 November 1962.
  • Since 2006, it has been under control of the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
  • The main responsibility of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) is weather forecasts, meteorological observations, and detecting earthquakes in India.
  • Pratyush is the fastest supercomputer in India, with a maximum speed of 6.8 petaflops, as of January 2018. Pratyush is a supercomputer designed and developed by Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune.
