Svante Arrhenius was the first Swedish scientist who first proposed that all acids contain hydrogen ions. He explained that acids are substances that dissociate in water to form electrically charged atoms or molecules, called ions, one of these is known as hydrogen ion ( H+), and the bases ionize in water to yield hydroxide ions (OH-).
