Ernest Rutherford discovered the atomic nucleus in the year 1911. He bombarded a beam of alpha particles on the gold foil and he observed that most of the alpha particles went pass through the foil undeflected whereas very few of them got reflected back by 180o which suggested that there must be a postively charged massive particle at the center of the atom which he later called nucleus.
