Question

The side of a cube is measured by vernier caliper (10 divisions of vernier scale coincide with 9 divisions of main scale, where 1 division of main scale is 1 mm). The main scale reads 10 mm and the first division of the vernier scale coincides with the main scale. The maximum % error in measurement of volume of the cube will be

Solution

The correct option is A 3%
Least count of vernier caliper
LC=Smallest division on main scaleNumber of divisions on vernier scale
LC=110=0.1 mm
Δ L=0.1 mm
Side length (L) of the cube = Scale reading
=10 mm +(1×0.1 mm)=10.1 mm
Volume of cube (V)=L3
Δ VV=3Δ LL=3×0.110.1=0.03
Δ VV×100=0.03×100=3%
% error in volume =3%
Hence, option (a) is the correct answer.
