The sides of the rectangle are in the ratio 4 is to 5.
i)By what fraction should the shorter side be increased to make it a square ?
ii)By what fraction shuold the longer side be decreased to make it a square?

let the sides of rectangle be 4x and 5x.

To make it a square shorter side ie 4x has to increase to make it 5x.
increase in length = 5x -4x = x
Fraction = x /4x = 1/4
1/4 of shorter side will have to increase to make it square

To make it a square longer side ie 5x has to decrease to make it 4x.
decrease in length = 5x -4x = x
Fraction = x /5x = 1/5
1/5 of longer side will have to decrease to make it square
