Hot spots are the genetic loci which are more susceptible to mutations. The concept was given by Benzer who suggested that differential mutation rates for AT and GC are partly because of the surrounding bases. For example, misalignment of template during DNA replication produces long repeats which are highly prone to mutations. Smallest unit capable of undergoing recombination is called as recon. A recon consists of one to several mutons, which are the smallest unit of mutation.
