The skeletal system in vertebrates is comprised of two main components which form the basic framework of the skeleton. These are bones and cartilage. The bones are hard calcified tissues that form the major part of the skeletal system whereas cartilage is soft, shiny, white connective tissue that is found at the junction of two bones and prevents them from rubbing against each other; cartilage also makes parts of nose and ears. Apart from bones and cartilage, there are specialized fibrous connective tissues known as tendons and ligaments. Ligaments bind bones to bones, whereas tendons bind muscles to bones.
