To form the smallest number using the digits 6, 1, 0, 1, 4 and 8 we need to arrange the numbers in ascending order.

On arranging 6, 1,0,1,4,8 in ascending order we get:

0 < 1,1 < 4 < 6 < 8.

But one of the given digits is 0. A 6-digit number cannot start with 0 as 0 has no value which will result in the formation of a 5-digit number instead. Hence, we add the zero as the second digit in the number.
