The smell of hot sizzling food reaches several meters away, but to get the smell from cold food, we have to go close. Which of the following reason suits the best?
Kinetic energy of food particles will not change irrespective to temperature.
As the temperature increases, the kinetic energy of food particles increases so the rate of diffusion (intermixing of particles of food into the air) increases. However, in the case of cold food, the particles have less kinetic energy and the rate of diffusion is too small. Therefore, we get the smell of hot sizzling food several meters away while this does not happen in case of cold food.
