The snow that has been left from previous seasons gets compacted and crystallised into a granular type of ice, called ‘firn’ or ‘neve’. This gradually accumulates with the glacier and thus this huge mass creates pressure at its bottom. Subsequently, the lowermost layer melts and water starts to move very slowly, gradually compelling the huge ice mass to move.
