It was initially banned by Chancellor Bismark from 1870 to 1890 and prohibited from any political activity. However, the party still had widespread support. The party later influenced the creation of the Weimar Republic. After the First World War, the party lost public support. They were one of the few groups that voiced their opinions against the Nazi party and its policies. They were banned again during Hitler's reign. After the Second World War ended, the party resurfaced once again.
