Question

The solubility of potassium chloride (KCl) and Hydrogen chloride (HCl) at different temperatures is given in the table below:

Temperature (degree celsius) 10 20 30 40 50
Solubility (g per 100 ml), KCl 31.2 34.2 37.2 40.1 42.6
Solubility (g per 100 ml), HCl 75 70 65.5 61 57.5

Rohit added 150 g of HCl to 240 mL of water at 10C. Choose the correct outcome.

Solution

The correct option is A An unsaturated solution will be formed
From the table, at 10C, the solubility of HCl = 75 g per 100 ml
Given, amount of solvent = 240 ml
Amount of solute(HCl) = 200 g
Amount of solute that will dissolve in water = Solubility × Given amount of solvent
= 75100×240
= 180 g
180 g of HCl can be dissolved in water to make a saturated solution.

Here, we have only 150 g, resulting in an unsaturated solution
