Solution

$α$ - radiation: $α$ - particles are not emitted. However, those emitted would be totally absorbed by the aluminium plates.

$β$ - radiations: With changing aluminium thickness, count rate varies widely. Therefore it is suitable for use.

$γ$ - radiation: $γ$ - rays are not absorbed by aluminium sheets, hence the count rate does not vary much.

Therefore, given that it is a single-type source, a $β$ - source should be used.
