We use a battery in a car, not a cell. Since the maximum voltage that a cell can provide is 1.5 volts. But for practical purposes, we need atleast 9 volts or 12 volts for any device to operate. Therefore in order to obtain appropriate voltage we use an array of cells connected in series with each other, called battery.
