Question

The speakers are coherent but have a phase difference of 180 ?
Give answer as multiples of individual intensity of speakers

Open in App
Solution

Path difference Δx=λ2
So, phase difference Φ=2πλΔx
ϕ=2πλ.λ2=π
Since the speakers are coherent and out of phase initially, thus total phase difference is π+π=2π.
This indicates that constructive interference takes place.
Resultant intensity IR=I1+I2+2I1I2cos2ϕ
Here, I1=I2=Io
IR=Io+Io+2IoIo(1)=4Io
So, if the speakers are coherent and out of phase initially, sound of intensity 4Io is heard.
