Pharynx is the common passage for food and air. Posteriorly the pharynx opens into the oesophagus (food pipe) and anteriorly into trachea (windpipe). A cartilaginous flap called epiglottis specifically prevents the entry of food into the glottis (opening of the windpipe) during swallowing. Larynx is the voice box. It consists of epiglottis, glottis, and various other cartilages.
