Solution

The correct option is A 2 m/s
To cross the river by the shortest time, one has to row the boat perpendicular to the river.
Let Vbr be the velocity of boat with respect to river. Vb and Vr are the velocities of boat and river w.r.t ground respectively.

According to question,
|Vbr|=5 m/s and |Vb|=3 m/s
We know that
Vbr=VbVr
Vb=Vbr+Vr
|Vb|=V2br+V2r
V2r+5=9
Vr=2 m/s

Alternative:
Use following equation
t=AB(=d)Vbr=BCVr=ACVb(=V2br+V2r)
|Vb|=V2br+V2r
V2r+5=9
Vr=2 m/s
