Question

The speed of a transverse wave in a wire of 1.0mm2 cross-section under a tension of 0.98 N is 1×10xm/s. Find x, if density of the material of wire is 9.8×103kg/m3.

Solution

Velocity of a transverse wave in a string of tension T and mass per unit length μ is Tμ.
Here μ=ml=ρAll=ρA
where ρ is the density of wire.
Thus μ=9.8×103×106kgm1
=9.8×103kgm1
Thus speed of the wave=0.989.8×103=10m/s
