Question

The speed of cyclist is 10m/s and speed of wind is 4m/s.can the speed of wind relative to the speed of cyclist be 10m/m?

Solution

If wind is blowing in direction in which cyclist rides it should be 4–10=-6m/s. But if wind is blowing in opposite direction it should be 4+10=14m/s. Newton had said that consider the velocity of an object with respect to surroundings. Here the cyclist is surrounding for wind. The cyclist moves faster than wind. The speed of cyclist is 10m/s while wind is 4m/s. We always consider surrounding at rest. So if cyclist has to be at rest his speed should br 0m/s. Cyclist travels at 10m/s and wind at 4m/s. So 4–10=-6m/s. (Because when you subtract 10-10 then you get zero. To equate both of their speed subtract 10 to 4 also). So the speed of wind is -6m/s relative to cyclist. This was the condition when wind travels in direction of cyclist. When cyclist travels in opposite direction of wind the speed of cyclist should be -10m/s for wind. But as I said before cyclist should be at rest for wind to find relative speed. So speed of wind relative to cyclist is 4+10=14m/s. ( Speed of cyclist is -10 to make it 0 we need to add 10. But we need to equate. So add 10 to 4m/s which gives 14m/s).
Hope it might help you.
