Question

The spin-only magnetic moment of a free ion is 8 B.M. The spin angluar momentum of the electron is xh2π. Find the value of x2.

Open in App
Solution

Spin only magnetic moment can be given as:
n(n+2)=8 B.M.
Where, n is the number of unpaired electrons
On solving,
n=2
S=12+12=1
Spin angular moment of an electron can be calculated by using the formula,
Ls=S(S+1)h2π=2h2π
Hence, x=2 and x2=2
