The spring balance A reads 2 kg with a block of mass m suspended from it. A balance B reads 5 kg when a beaker with liquid is put on the pan of the balance. The two balances are now so arranged that the hanging mass is inside the liquid in the beaker as shown in the figure, in this situation (given density of block > density of liquid)
The balance B will read more than 5 kg
The balance A will read less than 2 kg and B will read more than 5 kg
When block is placed in water, it will apply a force on water which is equal to the difference of its weight and the tension of string (mg - T), which will reflect on the reading of balance B. Hence, it will show more than 5 N.
In case of balance A, it will show a reduction in the reading because of the buoyant force applied by water on the block.
