Question

The standard free energies of formation in the gaseous state of methanol, dimethyl ether and water are 38.7,27.3 and 54.6 kcal respectively. Is the transformation of methanol to dimethyl ether water in gaseous state possible?
2CH3OHCH3OCH3+H2O

Open in App
Solution

The heat of formation of dimethyl ether from methanol = heat of formation of dimethyl ether + heat of formation of water - 2× heat of formation of methanol
Heat of formation of dimethyl ether from methanol =27.3+(54.6)2(38.7)=.5kcal
since the process the exothermic,
hence we can say transformation is possible.
