Gynoecium of a flower:

Gynoecium or pistil of a flower is the female reproductive part of a flower being the innermost whorl and composed of carpels. The pistil consists of ovary (bearing ovules), stigma (receptor for pollen grains) and style (connects stigma and ovary). After fertilisation, the ovules transform into seeds. A pistil can have more than one carpel (bicarpellary, tricarpellary etc.). Also, a carpel can have more than one ovule having distinct arrangement in the placenta.
