The short story 'The Necklace' deals with issues which are illustrative of the inner workings of human nature. For instance, the need to make a pretentious exhibition of oneself in society, as Mathilde demonstrates. She believed that she ought to have been a part of a higher social class and did everything in her power to put on that appearance. She lived in a world where her imagined reality was far different from the actual circumstances of her life. Her pretension of wealth and class were illusions carefully engineered to dupe the world into believing her appearance as her reality. The story also brings to the fore, materialistic aspirations of human beings, the value they attach to inanimate objects because they are looked upon as status symbols which must be acquired to keep up appearances in society.
