Solution

The correct option is D phosphorus
The rough surface of a matchbox is made up of a mixture of powdered glass, red phosphorous and other abrasive materials. The main constituent however is red phosphorus.

Rubbing this red phosphorus with matchstick converts it into white phosphorus. The reaction of white phosphorous and potassium chlorate in the matchstick head produces heat to ignite antimony trisulphide. This results in the combustion of the matchstick.
