  • When hydrocarbons or carbon-rich substances are burnt under a limited supply of oxygen/air, a smoky flame is produced which contains free carbon, and the substance produced is deposited as a black powder called lampblack, which is also known as carbon black or soot. This is then used in the preparation of printer ink and black paints. While as, when coke is formed no smoke is produced on burning.

Thus, the substance used in the preparation of printer's ink is lampblack.
