Combustion:

  1. A substance that has the potential to ignite is said to as combustible. It's called fuel. A magnesium ribbon starts to burn when heated.
  2. A burning magnesium ribbon creates heat and light as it combines with airborne oxygen to form magnesium oxide. A combustible substance is one that burns with the release of heat and light.
  3. Examples of fuels include wood, coal, kerosene, gasoline, LPG, and others.
  4. A material that can burn (combust) in the presence of air is said to be combustible.
  5. In other words, a flammable substance ignites instantly when exposed to flame, whereas a combustible substance requires some effort to ignite.
