Solution

Effect of sulphur dioxide gas on Taj Mahal:

  1. The IndianOil Mathura oil refinery is located in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh.
  2. The oil refinery produces low and high sulphur crude.
  3. Toxic gases like sulphur dioxide SO2 and significant levels of suspended particulate matter are released into the air by this oil refinery.
  4. Sulphuric acid H2SO4 is formed when sulphur dioxide combines with water in the atmosphere.
  5. The sulphuric acid in the atmosphere reaches the earth's surface in the form of acid rain.
  6. The sulphuric acid possess a serious threat to the marble of the Taj Mahal as it degrades the quality and colour of the marble.

Formation of sulphuric acid:

2SO2(g)(Sulphurdioxide)+2H2O(l(Water))2H2SO4(aq)(Sulphuricacid)

The reaction of H2SO4 with marble:

CaCO3(s)(Calciumcarbonate)+H2SO4(aq)(Sulphuricacid)CaSO4(aq)(Calciumsulphate)+H2O(l)(Water)+CO2(g)(Carbondioxide)
