A piece of cloth costs Rs.200.If the piece was 5mlonger and each meter of cloth costs Rs.2 less the cost of the piece would have remained unchanged. How long is the piece and what is the original rate per meter ?

Solution

Determine the original rate per meter:

Let the length of the cloth be xm.
Cost per meter =200x
The new length of the cloth =(x+5)m
The new cost per meter =200x-2
(x+5)200x-2=200

(x+5)(200-2x)x=200

or 200x-2x2+1000-10x=200x

or x2+5x-500=0

or (x+25)(x-20)=0

or x-25,x=20

Length of the piece =20m.
Original cost per meter = Rs.20020= Rs. 10.

Hence, length of the piece is 20m and original cost per meter is Rs. 10.
