Question

The sum of two integers is -11 and their product is-80.What are the two integers?

Open in App
Solution

Let the two integers be 'x' and 'y'
Now given that
Sum of the integers is - 11
That is x+y = - 11 this is equation number (1)
And also given that the product of the integers is -80
This can be written as
x*y = - 80
It is clear that one of the two integers must be negative. Because when two integers multiply and its product become negative only when one of the integer is negative.
Another way of finding the solution is by combining these equation but after that you will get a quadratic equation
That is y^2+11y - 80 =0
Since you are in 8th standard. You will learn this in higher class.
So you can apply hit and substitution.
That is by applying some integers as mentioned above mentor.
