The sum of two numbers is 45 and one is twice the other. What is the smaller number?
15
x + y = 45 …..(i)
x = 2y..(ii)
substituting from (ii) into (i) , we have
y + 2y = 45
3y = 45 ⇒ y = 15
From (i) : x + 15 = 45 ⇒ x = 45 – 15 = 30
So, the smaller number is 15 and the larger number is 30
