Question

The sun sends out coronal mass ejection having charged particles continuously towards the earth at a constant rate of 1.6 C/s throughout the day. Assuming that the sun and earth are maintained at a potential difference of 10,000 volts, find the energy received by India in 5 days. Given India receives 10% of the total energy received by the earth. Assume that India faces the sun 12 hours per day on an average.

The correct option is B


Assuming India faces the sun for 12 hrs each day

Now, Q = It

= 1.6 x 5 x 12 x 60 x 60 = 345600 C

Energy or Work done = qV

E = 345600 x 10000 = 3.45 x 109 J

India receives only 10% of the total energy being received by the face of earth so we get 10 % of the above number i.e. 3.45 x 108 J
