Each precaval is formed by the external jugular, the internal jugular, the subclavian and anterior intercostals veins. The external jugular collects blood from the head, tongue and the muscles of jaws. The internal jugular collects blood from the muscles of neck and brain. The subclavian vein collects blood from the shoulders and forelimbs and is connected to the external jugular. The right precaval also receives an intercostal vein collecting blood from the anterior intercostal spaces and an azygous vein bringing blood from posterior intercostals and the lumbar region. Both the anterior right and left precavals pour blood into the right auricle.
