Suppose a new variety is formed by incorporating the gene for disease resistance from Chavakkad orange variety to Lakshadweep variety. What set of characters will the new variety show?
Life span: 80-100 years, Disease resistance: high and yield in: 6-8 years
When a gene for a particular character is incorporated into an organism, it retains the original characters and additionally shows the character controlled by the inserted gene. In this case, the gene for disease resistance from variety A (Chavakkad orange) is incorporated into variety B (Lakshadweep). Therefore, variety B will retain its original characters i.e 80-100 years of life span and yield in 6-8 years. Additionally, it will show the character controlled by the inserted gene i.e. high disease resistance.
