Question

The table given below shows the number of protons and number of neutrons present in the nuclei of elements P and Q:

NucleiNumber of protonsNumber of neutronsP11Q12

Calculate the mass number of P and Q. What is the relation between P and Q? Which element do they represent?

Open in App
Solution

Mass number of P = Number of protons + Number of neutrons = 1+1=2

Mass number of Q = 1+2 = 3

P and Q are isotopes. It is because they have same atomic number 1, but different atomic masses 2 and 3 respectively. P and Q represent isotopes of hydrogen.
