Solution

The correct option is A True

Chromatography

  • Chromatography is a technique in which the sample which is dissolved in a solvent (mobile phase) passes through the stationary phase and the components are separated.
  • Depending upon the type of stationary phase, different types of chromatography exist, i.e paper chromatography in which paper is the stationary phase, and column chromatography in which silica packed in a glass tube act as the stationary phase.
  • To separate different dyes present in black ink, we can use paper chromatography.
  • 20 cm long and 5 cm wide chromatographic paper was taken for the separation.
  • Make a baseline with a pencil by leaving 4 cm gap from one end of the paper.
  • Drop the black ink on the middle of the black ink.
  • When the solvent rises through the paper, the colors blue, red and yellow separate out into different heights.
  • The component (substance) which readily dissolves in the solvent will travel farthest up through the stationary phase (paper).

Principle of the technique

  • The components present in the sample separate out into different heights depending upon the solubility of substances in the solvent and the ability to adsorb on the stationary phase (adsorbent)

Therefore the given statement is true, i.e.., the technique of chromatography is based on the difference in solubility of the substances in the solvent and the rates at which the substances are adsorbed on a suitable adsorbent.
