Question

The temperature and the dew point in an open room are 20°C and 10°C. If the room temperature drops at 15°C, what will be the new dew point?

BOOK ANSWER : 10°C

MY SUGGESTION :

My answer is also same as book because I think that dew point do not depend on environment temperature.

But I want to know that the reason I have mentioned is true or not, if my reason is wrong then why?

Solution

You are right , but not completely right
Dew point mainly depend on Relative humidity
The dew point is always below the air temperature. This is because you can’t have relative humidly higher that 100%. So, increasing temperature has no effect on dew point. Decreasing temperature also has no effect on dew point until you get to the dew point, or below. At this point water will start condensing out of air, thus lowering it’s humidly and thus it’s dew point.
