The temporary hardness of water can be removed by:
Boiling
The temporary hardness of water is caused by calcium and magnesium bicarbonates, which decompose to carbonates on boiling and these have much lower solubility in water. The reaction occurs as follows:
Ca(HCO3)2boil−−→CaCO3+H2O+CO2
The calcium carbonate formed is insoluble and can be removed by filtration. Therefore, by boiling, the temporary hardness of water can be removed.
