"The tendency of Li and Mg to form nitrides is such that Li forms nitride whereas Mg does not."

The statement is false.
Both Li and Mg form nitrides; Li3N and Mg3N2 respectively.
Lithium is the only alkali metal (group 1) to form a nitride when burnt in air. (This is however common with the alkaline earth metals (group 2).
Because Li3N is covalent and as the metallic character increases ,the tendency of donating electron and forming ionic bond increases due to which, strength of metal nitrogen bond decreases.
