Question

The total number of electrons present in the first two and the last two shells is the same for an atom of an element X. The sum of the electrons present in second, fourth and fifth shells is equal to the number of electrons present in the third shell and the fifth shell is the valence shell. Identify X and predict its position in the periodic table?

Solution

1.In element X, equal electrons are present in first &second with the fourth and fifth shells which has two and eight electrons and the fifth is the valence shell, which has 2e-.
2.The element X's electronic configuration is

K L M N O.

2 8 18 8 2

3.Strontium, atomic number 38, is the element X.

4.Its location in the electrical configuration is - period: number of shells in which electrons are placed, therefore 5. Group: the number of valence shell electrons present, so 2, resulting in the 5th period and 2nd group.
