Hot acidified KMnO4 solution oxidizes the alkene by leaving carbon-carbon soluble bond and replacing it with two carbon-oxygen double bonds. But the aldehyde i.e CH3CHO is readily oxidized give carboxylic acid i.e. CH3COOH .
