The trend of ionization potential along a period increases and along a group in the periodic table is decreases.

I.P is the amount of energy released to remove an electron from the outer most shell in its gaseous state.

In a period atomic size decreases as we move from left to right because of increase in nuclear charge hence it is difficult for us to remove as we move from left to right.

Hence I.P increases in a period.

In case of group as the atomic size increases from top to bottom I.P decreases as it is not so difficult to remove electron from the large size atom.

Hence finally along period increases and in a group decreases.
