Question

The triangle A(1,2),B(4,4) and C(3,7) is first reflected in the line y=0 onto triangle Aā€²Bā€²Cā€² and then triangle Aā€²Bā€²Cā€² is reflected in the origin onto triangle Aā€²ā€²Bā€²ā€²Cā€²ā€². Write down the co-ordinates of :
(i) Aā€²,Bā€² and Cā€²
(ii) Aā€²ā€²,Bā€²ā€² and Cā€²ā€².

Solution

Reflection in y=0 means reflection in x-axis.
(i) Since, reflection in the x-axis is given by Mx(x,y)=(x,āˆ’y)
āˆ“Aā€²= reflection of A(1,2) in the x-axis =(1,āˆ’2)
Similarly, Bā€²=(4,āˆ’4) and Cā€²=(3,āˆ’7)

(ii) Since, reflection in the origin is given by Mo(x,y)=(āˆ’x,āˆ’y)
āˆ“Aā€²ā€²= reflection of Aā€²(1,āˆ’2) in the origin =(āˆ’1,2)
Similarly, Bā€²ā€²=(āˆ’4,4) and Cā€²ā€²=(āˆ’3,7)
