Question

The turbine at the Niagara falls is 50 m deep. The average horse power developed is 500. If the efficiency of the generator is 85%, how much water passes through the turbine per minute?

Solution

The average power developed is = 500 hp = 373000 W
Let P be the actual power of which 85% is utilized by the turbine.
So, 85P100=373000
P=4388235.W
So, the energy utilized by the turbines per second is 438823.53 J
The energy utilized per minute is = 438823.53×60=2362941.18J
Let 'm' be the mass of water that falls through height 50 per minute to generate energy 2632941.18 J
Therefore, mgh = 2632941.18
m(10)(50)=2362941.18
m=52658.82 kg
Thus, 52658.82 kg water passes through the turbine per minute.
