The two blocks in an Atwood machine have masses 2.0 kg and 3.0 kg. Find the work done by gravity during the fourth second after the system is released from rest. (g=10m/s2)

a=m2m1m1+m2g=g5=2m/s2

Distance covered by each block in nth second is

s=u+a2(2n1) and here u=0

s=22(2×41)=7m

Total work done=work done on m1 moving up + work done on m2 moving down.

Work=F×s=mgs as force is gravity.

W=m1gs+m2gs=(m2m1)gs

W=1×10×7

W=70J
