The two-layered sac surrounding the heart is called _______.
Pericardium
The heart remains enclosed in a double-walled sac called pericardium. In between the two layers, there is a very narrow space, called the pericardial cavity, which is filled with pericardial fluid. This fluid prevents the heart from stretching too much and overfilling with blood. It lubricates the heart to prevent friction with the tissues around it as it beats and it also protects the heart from any infections that might spread from nearby organs like the lungs.
